Ashton, or to give it its full title: Ashton-under-Lyne, has so much to recommend it. With its famous market, two museums, multitude of shops and shopping centres, and its extensive leisure attractions, whether you live within the town or are simply a visitor, there are an exhilarating variety of things to see and do.
At the heart of the town is ‘Ashton Market’, an ancient open market and Victorian market hall that remain as exciting and compelling for today’s visitors as they did for shoppers so many years ago. Adjacent to the market square, housed within the old town hall is the ‘Museum of the Manchesters’, a fascinating display dedicated to the history of the Manchester Regiment. Not far away in a beautifully restored canal warehouse is Portland Basin Museum where visitors can experience life as it was in years gone by. All around the town centre there are narrow streets and tiny alleyways where you can discover so many interesting independent shops and dining places, while on the edge of town Ashton’s shopping centres include many of the UK’s most famous retail names.
